The SH word
Allison bought herself a book the other day from a series that she has been reading. I tried to skim over the books to make sure that they were appropriate, but I was so INCREDIBLY bored by the things that I couldn't make it past the first few chapters of the first book. Anyway, I told her that I trusted her and let it go at that. So last night at dinner I asked her how she was enjoying her new book. She, of course, loves it. I followed up with a remark about how I was confident that it was a worthwhile book and that it didn't have anything inappropriate in it. At the inappropriate part she paused and responded that the book had said a bad word a couple of times. Brent piped right up and wanted to know what bad word it had used! Allison gave Brent "the look" (anyone with a pre-teen daughter will understand exactly what is encompassed in the look!). I tried to assuage her concerns by telling her it was okay because Dad knows all the bad words! I thought it was pretty funny, but she didn't laugh. Finally, Brent said, just tell me what it starts with. "S!" was the response. What? What is the second letter? In a hushed whisper she responded, "H." WHAT?!! Go and get that book right this minute! While she is scurrying off to her room it dawns on me that we homeschool. She has no idea what the real SH bad word is. The Sh bad word in our house is Shut Up! Needless to say we reassured Allison that she was fine and could keep her book--uncensored!
