The kids had a karate tournament last weekend. It was their first real tournament. All of the other ones that we have been to were simply the feel good demonstration tournaments where everyone gets a trophy. All three kids tried hard and did a wonderful job. Savanna once again had to overcome here stage fright during her kata which she did manage to do. She doesn't have the same level of anxiety during sparring. I guess she just prefers to beat people up to performing! In fact, she took 1st place in her division in sparring without even breaking a sweat. Allison was sharp on her kata, and there was a 3 way tie for 1st place. After doing her second kata she placed 2nd overall. Her sparring match was a bit sad. She was doing awesome and should have won. She and the other girl were in sudden death, and the girl hit Allison right in the mouth. That should have been the end of the match but for some reason it wasn't. As they continued the sudden death match, Allison thought that she had gotten the point needed to win and quit fighting and the other girl punched her right in the solar plexis. It ended up that the other girl won because the judges hadn't seen Allison's punch. That's the way it goes sometimes, I guess...
Braden did an awesome job on his kata. It took us probably 10 minutes to even gather up all of his gear for his sparring. It was pretty funny to see how many boys had forgotten to wear their mouth guard and their cups.
The funny thing about this all is that most kids and their parents go to EVERY possible tournament that they can so that they can qualify for State Championships. It is all based on how many points you earn at the tournaments during the year. Well, Savanna ended up qualifying for State.
